Youth Council Student Spotlight

Beginning in September 2010, the Delaware County Youth Council partnered with the Delaware County Times highlighting outstanding students who go the extra mile. Criteria for these students include being a Delaware County resident, active in schools clubs, actively volunteering in the community and mentoring others. Good deeds and exceptional stories may also be published.

Spotlight: Amanda Khuu
School: Penn Wood High School
Grad Level: Junior

Amanda is a junior at Penn Wood High School. In addition to being a dedicated student, Amanda demonstrates leadership in having had distinguished honors and placing third in the schools science fair. Amanda’s outside school activities include being part of the color guard, softball and stage crew. Amanda continues to be very active in her community and is part of the Philadelphia China Town clean-up crew. The Youth Council of Delaware County commends Amanda for her achievements.

Spotlight: Brittney Whitfield
School: Smedley Allied Health
Grad Level: Junior


Brittany is a junior at Smedley Allied Health High School. In addition to being a dedicated student, Brittney demonstrates leadership in having had distinguished honors and was recognized at Mayor Wendell Butler’s Students Honors Banquet. Brittney’s outside school activities include being a volunteer at the Salvation Army Toys for Tots. Brittney continues to be very active in her community and is a member of the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA). Spotlight: Bryan Dewan
School: Springfield High School
Grad Level: Junior



Bryan is a junior at Springfield High School. In addition to being a dedicated student, Ryan is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, the Marching Band and Jazz Band. Bryan’s outside school activities includes, community service efforts within his church, earning the title of “Eagle Scout” and holing many other leadership responsibilities with his troop.  Bryan continues to be very active in his community. School: Upper Darby High School

Dana is a junior at Upper Darby High School. In addition to being a dedicated student, Dana demonstrates leadership in having had distinguished honors. Dana’s outside school activities include being a dancer at the Pennsylvania Academy of Ballet. Dana continues to be very active in her community and is the co-president of the Upper Darby High School Environmental Club (REAL). Spotlight: Jordan Mink
School: Garnet Valley High School
Grad Level: Junior


Jordan is a junior at Garnet Valley High School. In addition to being a dedicated student, Jordan demonstrates leadership in having had distinguished honors, receiving the President’s Education Award and Presidential Physical Fitness Award. Jordan’s outside school activities include being part of a clothing drive and serving lunches to the homeless with the Brandywine Valley Baptist Church. Jordan continues to be very active in her community and is involved in many sports activities. She was quoted by her counselor, Michael Salladino, “Jordan is a great role model and a valuable member of our student body.” The Youth Council of Delaware County commends Jordan for her achievements.

Spotlight: Zachary Schauerman
School: Penncrest High School
Grad Level: Junior


Zachary is a junior at Penncrest High School. In addition to being a dedicated student, Zachary demonstrates leadership in having honors level courses and is an active member of student government. Zachary’s outside school activities include being part of a volunteer project with Philabundance and participating in the annual Relay for Life with the American Cancer Society. Zachary continues to be very active in his community and is a member of the Penncrest Lacrosse team. He was quoted by his counselor, David M. Harple, M. Ed., “Zachary’s energy and enthusiasm for project energizes his classmates.” The Youth Council of Delaware County commends Zachary for his achievements.

Spotlight: Ricky Blair
School: Chichester High School
Grad Level: Sophomore

Ricky is a sophomore at Chichester High School. In addition to being a dedicated student, Ricky currently serves as the Vice President for the class of 2013. Ricky is involved in many school activities including, Student Council and Enrichment Studies Program. Athletically, Ricky has played Varsity Soccer for two years, and freshman Baseball. Ricky also finds time to give back to his community. He is currently implementing a Mentoring Program for a community baseball league. Barton is an outstanding senior honors student at Strath Haven High School.  In addition to being a dedicated student he has earned Rank of Eagle Scout, merit badges and accomplished all requirements. He earned the coveted Hornaday Award and was elected to the Order of the Arrow, scouting’s national honors society. Spencer currently mentors younger scouts in the community. Spotlight: Chelsey Marie Geiger
School: Ridley High School
